Style Your Halloween from Your Closet

Could last year’s Halloween outfit be reinvented for this year? Separate UK research found that two out of every five costumes are worn only once. So this year, before buying a brand-new costume, start by picking one standout silhouette already hanging in your closet.

Scarier Than Any Ghost

A joint investigation by UK environmental charities Hubbub and the Fairyland Trust looked into the materials used in Halloween costumes sold across 19 retailers, including ASOS, Amazon, John Lewis, and Tesco.

The findings were staggering:

83% of the materials used were oil-based plastics, with polyester making up 69% of all textiles. The report estimated that discarded Halloween costumes in the UK generate about 2,079 tonnes of plastic waste—the equivalent of 83 million plastic bottles.

Keep in mind, this figure reflects just a single market: the UK. This isn’t a global total, but a snapshot of just one country during a single holiday season.

These numbers are heavy, but the point isn’t to cancel Halloween. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Great Costumes Are Curated, Not Bought

The real issue with off-the-rack costumes isn’t just environmental—it’s that they’re boring.

When multiple people buy the exact same costume from the same store, walking into a party turns into an accidental uniform check.

Building a costume from your own closet, on the other hand, lets you create a look tailored specifically to you. Plus, there’s genuine fun in styling the pieces you already own in unexpected ways.

Adding thrift stores, rentals, or clothes swaps with friends opens up even more possibilities. Since stock and seasonal options vary by location, start by checking out your local spots.

So, how should you dig through your closet?

The 3-Step Formula for Closet Costumes

Step 1: Pick a single silhouette.

Starting with a specific character often leads to a dead end, because chances are, you don’t own their exact costume. Flip the script: find the most distinctive silhouette in your closet first, then reverse-engineer the character from there.

A long trench coat turns into a classic detective; an all-black set transforms into a cat, a shadow, or a burglar; a crisp white shirt with a blazer easily becomes an office zombie. Once the silhouette is locked in, the rest naturally follows.

Step 2: Stick to a single color palette.

This is the fastest shortcut to a polished look. Mixing too many random colors can look haphazard, but committing to a cohesive color palette instantly looks intentional. With a unified base, adding just one key prop completes the entire identity.

Step 3: Invest in just one standout accessory.

A hat, a mask, gloves, or glasses—one key piece is all you need. A costume’s identity is almost always anchored by a single accessory near the face. Better yet, small accessories take up minimal space, making them easy to keep for next year.

Here’s an extra tip: swap clothes with friends. A piece you never wear might be the exact statement Item your friend needs for their costume. You’ll multiply your Outfit options—completely free.

After the Party

Once the night wraps up, wash your clothes and put them right back where they belong. This is the final—and most important—step of crafting a closet costume.

Even store-bought costumes last longer when reworn, swapped, or altered. And the everyday clothes pulled from your closet simply return to your daily rotation after a wash. The secret is styling one piece in multiple ways.

Save your finished look as an Outfit in the Acloset app. Next October, you won’t have to wonder, "What did I wear last year?" Over time, you’ll build your very own costume archive—a much more personal and rewarding record than buying something new every year.

This Halloween, before heading to the store, open your Closet doors first. You’ll be surprised by how much is already waiting for you.

❓ FAQ

Q: Should I throw away costumes I’ve already bought?
A: No. The worst thing you can do is let them sit unused. If you already own them, rewear them over several years, share them with friends, and resell or donate them when you’re truly finished with them.

Q: Can I put together kids’ costumes from our closet, too?
A: It’s actually even easier! Kids’ costumes usually come down to one key accessory. A cape, animal ears headband, or a themed hat does most of the heavy lifting—and can easily be reused next year.

Q: Can I use Acloset to brainstorm costume ideas?
A: Yes! Filtering your Closet by color tags instantly reveals base combinations like "all-black" or "all-white." Once your look is complete, save it as an Outfit so you can pull it up anytime next year.
